SAATHI Transition Training

SAATHI Transition Training strives to help parents plan for their child’s future with the knowledge of the system and with advocacy skills to get their voices heard.

​

The training program is a 6 week commitment including 1.5 hours online training sessions per week and surveys to see individual progress.

Week 1: Introduction to Transition Training

This session will discuss perks gained and the overall process of SAATHI Transition Training, strengths Desi parents may not recognize, and dispel common myths of planning to build more confidence in preparing early for your children. The main topics covered in this session:

What is a transition plan?

What does a transition plan include?

How to advocate for ARD goals 

Week 2: Higher Education and Living Options

This session will discuss the rights children with disabilities hold, local post secondary school programs, and tips for education/training options to best support your young adult with adulthood goals. The main topics covered in this session:

Opportunities available for high education

Vocational Opportunities

Day programs and resources to find appropriate living options

Week 3: Financial Planning

This session will discuss accessing and applying for appropriate government benefits to financially support the individual with a disability after the age of 18. It will be led by financial planning experts in the community. The main topics covered in this session:

Financial planning across lifespan

Government benefits

Medicaid waivers

Week 4: Assembling Wills, Trusts, Guardianships

 

This session will discuss additional tools to secure a financial future for young adults with disabilities. This includes wills, estate planning, guardianship, special needs trusts, and ABLE accounts. It will be led by financial planning experts in the community. The main topics covered in this session:​

Becoming equipped in financial literacy
Guided by financial experts
Securing financial future

Week 5: Employment Opportunities

This session will discuss how an individual can start to earn their own money gives your young adult more financial independence. Also, informing parents of various employment training opportunities for their children. The main topics covered in this session:

Teaches how increases self-esteem and self-confidence.
Teaching basic/Soft job skills
Providing types of employment options

Week 6: Transitioning to Adulthood Resources

 

This section discusses resources such as organizations, webinars and trainings available to aid families in the transition process of planning for their child's adult life. Platforms are created for parents to help them in various avenues of the transition planning. The main topics covered in this session:
